NSI Parent/Family Information

The mission of New Student Indoctrination (NSI) is to provide standardized basic military instruction to Midshipmen Candidates in order to facilitate successful integration of new students into Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps and college life.

If you are flying in on Monday 1 July (NSI 1) or Tuesday 23 July (NSI 2),
please follow the below instructions.

  • Upon arrival to Chicago O'Hare International Airport, go to the USO located at Terminal 2, Mezzanine Level of the Rotunda, G Concourse, pre-security. Our staff will not be located at the USO located in Terminal 3, post-security.
  • All Midshipmen Candidates will be checked in by our staff at the USO located at Terminal 2. From there, you will moved to the buses for transportation to Naval Station Great Lakes.
  • For flights arriving prior to 1100 (11AM), lunch will be provided. Dinner will be provided for all Midshipmen Candidates regardless of flight arrival time.
  • Midshipmen Candidates that are flying in will need to bring a backpack with hygiene gear and one set of proper civilian attire. Midshipmen Candidates will not be allowed to bring in anything larger than a backpack.
  • If your Midshipment Candidate is being dropped off on Tuesday 2 July (NSI 1) or Wednesday 24 July (NSI 2), please follow the below instructions.

  • The check-in location will be at the National Museum of the American Sailor located at Building 42, 610 Farragut Ave, Great Lakes, IL, 60088. This building is located off-base.
  • Midshipmen Candidates need to be dropped off no later than 1100 (11 AM).
  • Our staff will check-in all Midshipmen Candidates at the parking log of the National Museum of the American Sailor. From there, Midshipmen Candidates will be moved to the buses for transportation to Naval Station Great Lakes in order to begin in-processing.
  • Lunch and dinner will be provided after check-in for Midshipmen Candidates.
  • Midshipment Candidates that are being dropped off will not be allowed to bring in any outside belongings other than a cell phone and wallet.

Ceremonial Oath

  • Family members and friends are invited to come to the ceremonial oath taking place at the Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall at Recruit Training Center Great Lakes at 1700 (5 PM) on Tuesday 2 July (NSI 1) and Wednesday 24 July (NSI 2).
  • The Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall is located on base (See below map). If you are planning to attend, please email your name and country of citizenship to LT Slappe (cslappe@citadel.edu) no later than Sunday 9 June (NSI 1) / Monday 24 June (NSI 2). By doing so, you will be allowed on base. You will only be able to enter through gate 8, located on Ohio Street.
  • This gate will be open one hour prior to the beginning of the ceremonial oath and you will be directed to the destination.
  • Upon completion of the ceremonial oath, Midshipment Candidates will immediately begin training.

Graduation

  • Family members and friends are invited to come to the NSI graduation taking place at the Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall at Recruit Training Center Great Lakes at 0900 (9 AM) on Monday 22 July (NSI 1) and Tuesday 13 August (NSI 2).
  • The Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall is located on base (See below map). If you are planning to attend, please email your name and country of citizenship to LT Slappe (cslappe@citadel.edu) no later than Saturday 22 June (NSI 1) / Saturday 13 July (NSI 2). By doing so, you will be allowed on base. You will only be able to enter through gate 8, located on Ohio Street.
  • This gate will be open one hour prior to the beginning of the ceremonial oath and you will be directed to the destination.
  • Upon completion of graduation, those Midshipment Candidates that will be flying back will be immediately taken to Chicago O'Hare International Airport via buses. Midshipment Candidates that are being picked up by family members and friends will be immediately available after graduation.

Additional Information

  • The ceremonial oath and graduation, for both NSI cycles, will be live-streamed on Facebook at the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps - NROTC page (@NavalReserveOfficersTrainingCorps).
  • If there are any problems during your travel to NSI, please contact LT Man at phone number (850) 418-1138. This number will only be active during the NSI travel dates.
